“You look fabulous,” he said before he pulled her into a short and very sweet embrace.

“You look rather handsome yourself,” she told him when he released her.

“Thanks,” he replied.

“Merrooww,” Katie greeted him.

Daniel bent down and scratched her under her chin. “How are you tonight? Your fur coat is especially lovely this evening.”

“Meowwww,” Katie replied.

“Your dinner is in the kitchen,” Fenella told her. “I won’t be out too late.”

“You won’t?” Daniel teased.

Fenella laughed. “You have to work tomorrow, don’t you?”

“Yes, of course. We’re going to the memorial service, remember? I’m not officially working the service, but I’ll be working.”

“You’re always working,” Fenella suggested.

He shrugged. “That goes with the job.”

She grabbed her handbag and slid on the shoes that were a perfect match for the dress. Mona’s shoes were as magical as her dresses, in that they were all incredibly comfortable, regardless of how high the heels were.

“So, what did you do today?” Daniel asked as they waited for the elevator.

“I took a nice long walk on the promenade, which included a run with Winston. Then I did some shopping, but otherwise, it was a fairly quiet day.”

“Really? And you didn’t see anyone associated with the case?” Daniel sounded shocked.

“Not a single person.”

“That’s almost disappointing,” he said thoughtfully as they boarded the elevator car. “You always see people associated with our investigations. I was expecting you to have something to tell me tonight.”

“Does that mean, since I didn’t see anyone, you don’t want to have dinner with me?”

Daniel laughed. “Not at all. I’m just surprised. But never mind. We can have a nice meal without ever once having to mention Darrell or wallabies.”

They chatted about the weather as they walked the short distance to the restaurant. “Table for two,” Daniel told the host.

“Right this way,” he replied, leading them into the restaurant.

“And then her luck changed,” Fenella muttered as the man stopped at a not-so-private table in the corner.

“Oh, my goodness,” Gail Greer said from a table only a few feet away as she looked up at Fenella. “Hello, there.”

“Hello,” Fenella replied. She looked at Daniel, who shrugged and then sat down in the chair further from Gail. Fenella slid into the seat nearest Gail, swallowing a sigh as she did so.

“I’m meant to be meeting a friend,” Gail said quickly. “But she hasn’t arrived yet.”

“I hope everything is okay,” Fenella replied.

“Oh, Jane is nearly always late for everything,” Gail laughed.

A waiter appeared with a drink for Gail and then took drink orders from Fenella and Daniel. When he was gone, Fenella turned back to Gail.

“How are you?” she asked.

“How am I? I’m fine, really. I’m still disappointed that the hunt was canceled so unexpectedly, but I suppose, considering the circumstances, it isn’t surprising.”

“I wonder what will happen to the charity now,” Fenella said.

Gail looked surprised. “Why should anything happen to it? I mean, Darrell never did that much of the work anyway. Rodney did nearly everything, so he can simply continue to do so.”

“Except Darrell was funding the operation, wasn’t he? I suppose it will be up to his heir, whoever that is, to decide what to do.
